Foremost is simple and lightweight Linux forensic software that recovers files based on information contained in their headers, footers and data structures. As it focuses on image forensics, this tool supports many image formats for data recovery, including JPG, GIF, PNG and BMP types. For other media, the tool supports AVI, EXE, MPG, RIFF, WMV, MOV, PDF, OLE, DOC, ZIP, RAR, HTM and other formats. Foremost displays copyright information for objects and features indirect block detection and time stamps. Users may run the program in "verbose" mode, which displays more information on screen, or quick mode, which searches matching headers of the longest length and shortens the duration of the search.
